West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) director of operations and 77th Brigade Troop Commander, Col. Michaelle Munger, visited Soldiers and Airmen supporting the Task Force Operation Guardian Support in Arizona March 17th - 20th, 2019.

WVNG Soldiers and Airmen volunteers are conducting a variety of missions, including: analyst support, vegetation clearing, property accountability and aviation support. All efforts are in support of the Arizona National Guard (AZNG) for Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) support. National Guard support assists the CBP in enabling their agents to serve on the border by conducting administrative jobs in the rear.

"Our Guard Members are contributing to a mission, and are doing a phenomenal job serving as ambassadors to the CBP and the Arizona National Guard. The leadership of WVNG is supportive of their efforts and contributions," Munger said. "With West Virginia's opioid and drug crisis, it is not lost on me that some of the drugs come to West Virginia from across the border; we are all affected by the situation at the border, in one way or another."

Munger also met with Task Force Operation Guardian Support commander, AZNG Col. Hoyt Slocum, and the senior enlisted leader, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Lamme, and received a concept of the operations overview from the Arizona National Guard perspective. She also met with the on-ground Customs and Border Patrol leaders at Tucson, Douglas, Sanoitas, and Nogales and learned first-hand how WVNG Soldiers and Airmen were contributing to the mission at each of those locations.

The WVNG often works with state and federal agencies in all manners of operations and emergencies, and the experience the Guard Members are gaining as part of the task force is invaluable, Munger said.
